Data Wind Chime

Data Physicalisation

of Soundscape Perception

London

2021

My work responds to the invisible perception of soundscapes and manifests, or makes visible, this perception as a mobile / wind chime. I gathered data on the perceptions of soundscapes among people living in Elephant and Castle, as well as data on personal factors that influence soundscape perception.

The data is then transformed into abstract shapes which represent different individuals’ response to each type of sound. This forms the vertical sections of the wind chime, the parts of which collide to produce a kind of melody that is also a response to the urban sound environment.

The data wind chimes are intended to demonstrate the differences in soundscape perceptions among individuals. The physical collision of elements creates an auditory experience that enhances the sensory dimension for the audience. It also calls for the relevant policy-makers to pay more attention to the specific situation and individuals’ lived experience while managing urban sound to make our city sound more positive in terms

of its impact on residents’ well-being.
